When we think about children’s immersion in the culture to which they belong, this process becomes most evident when they encounter the symbols and elements of that culture.
At Carnival, there are marchinhas, dances, and costumes. On St. Patrick’s Day, there are green outfits, leprechauns, and gold coins. Understanding the concepts: What is Carnival? Or what
does the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day represent for Irish people who emigrated and wished to maintain ties with their ancestral culture?
Well, this will be fully understood with more life lessons learned, but experiencing these symbols of one’s own culture and the culture of others who also wish to express what connects them
to a community allows children to glimpse the importance of the sense of belonging, of recognizing themselves as part of a certain time and a place in history. It also paves the way to identify with their local culture, as well as appreciate and value the culture of other places, and
recognize that at the heart of it all, we are all connected in our need to connect with culture and to each other.

Celebrando cultura e reconhecendo identidades

Ao pensarmos na inserção das crianças à cultura à qual pertencem, parece mais visível observar esse processo nos encontros com os símbolos e elementos da cultura.
No Carnaval tem marchinhas, danças, fantasias. No Saint Patrick’s Day tem roupa verde, leprechaun e moedas de ouro. A compreensão dos conceitos: O que é o Carnaval? Ou o que
representa a celebração do Saint Patrick’s Day para o povo irlandês que emigrou e desejou manter laços com sua cultura ancestral?

Bom, isso será compreendido em sua profundidade com mais tempo de vida, mas vivenciar esses símbolos da própria cultura e da cultura de outros que também querem expressar aquilo
que os vincula a uma comunidade, permite às crianças vislumbrarem a importância do sentimento de pertencer, de reconhecer-se parte de um tempo e de um espaço.
Torna possível também identificar sua cultura local, bem como apreciar e valorizar a cultura de outros lugares e reconhecer que no âmago de tudo isso, estamos todos conectados na nossa
necessidade de nos vincularmos à cultura e uns aos outros.
