This quote from the Slovenian writer Feri Lainšček makes visible the importance of developing young children’s observational skills, as they are natural seekers of explanations to make sense of their experiences with nature, creating their own theories to understand the world around them: such observations and investigations of the local environment enables them to identify and answer questions that sparks further curiosity.
Autumn has arrived and the falling leaves began to cover the floor in a mixture of colors and shades of green, brown, orange and yellow. So, as part of our science classes, our second graders went on a leaf hunt through the school’s gardens. After they collected a great deal of leaves, they were invited to observe them in different ways.
In the very first step of this investigation, they were able to look closer to the leaf and recall the parts of the plants, as well as to describe its different shapes and colors that they could notice with their naked eye. Then, they could take a further look at these parts using a digital pen as an observation tool, which allowed them to realize in detail some plant parts they couldn’t see before. Finally, they went to the science lab to observe the leaves through the lens of a microscope and register what they could see to later compare the differences in each one of the observations.
Besides investigating and observing the leaves, our little ones could use their creativity to make art with the leaves. The big question was: what can you turn a leaf into? And they created many interesting animals and creatures, expanding imagination and having fun as well.
Although kids discovered that such tools can extend our eyes capabilities to visualize details that we are unable to perceive with naked eyes, it was through the lens of curiosity that these vibrant discoveries came to life.

Descobertas vibrantes através das lentes da curiosidade

Esta citação do escritor esloveno Feri Lainšček torna visível a importância de desenvolver as habilidades de observação das crianças pequenas, pois elas são buscadoras naturais de explicações para dar sentido às suas experiências com a natureza, criando suas próprias teorias para entender o mundo ao seu redor: tais observações e investigações do ambiente local permitem-lhes identificar e responder a perguntas que despertam mais sua curiosidade.
O outono chegou e as folhas que caem começaram a cobrir o chão numa mistura de cores e tons de verde, marrom, laranja e amarelo. Então, como parte de nossas aulas de ciências, nossos alunos do Grade 2 foram caçar folhas pelos jardins da escola. Após coletarem uma grande quantidade de folhas, foram convidados a observá-las de diferentes maneiras.
Na primeira etapa desta investigação, eles puderam olhar mais de perto a folha e lembrar sobre as partes das plantas, bem como descrever suas diferentes formas e cores que podiam notar a olho nu. Então eles puderam olhar mais a fundo para essas partes usando uma caneta digital como ferramenta de observação, o que lhes permitiu perceber em detalhes algumas partes que antes não conseguiam ver. Por fim, foram ao laboratório de ciências observar as folhas através da lente de um microscópio e registrar o que puderam ver para depois comparar as diferenças em cada uma das observações.
Além de investigar e observar as folhas, nossos pequenos puderam usar sua criatividade para fazer arte com as folhas. A grande questão era: em que você pode transformar uma folha? E eles criaram muitos animais e criaturas interessantes, expandindo a imaginação e se divertindo também.
Embora as crianças tenham descoberto que essas ferramentas podem ampliar a capacidade de nossos olhos para visualizar detalhes que não conseguimos perceber a olho nu, foi através da lente da curiosidade que essas descobertas vibrantes ganharam vida.
